Split the cost

Tell us your totals, and we’ll calculate exactly how much you can split with passengers.

Focus on flying

We handle the rest, from matching you with passengers to educating them on proper protocol.

Travel efficiently

By increasing the occupancy of your plane, you’ll reduce your carbon footprint.

How it works

Hitch is one of Blackbird’s three flight options, designed to bring more people the freedom of flight.

1
Submit your flight plans

Blackbird never posts them publicly, as per FAA Advisory Circular 120-12A.

2
Get matched

We’ll notify you if any passengers submit your same route.

3
Fly

Your passengers will meet you on the tarmac, just like a carpool.

Pilot requirements

To keep our standards high, pilots meet requirements set by the FAA and Blackbird.

Your aircraft

Pilots can either fly their own aircraft, or rent one and split the fee with passengers.

Cost sharing

Let us know how much you spent, and we’ll calculate how much you can safely split.

Insurance

In addition to your own standard insurance, Blackbird carries additional coverage.

Safety

Passengers are educated on the proper in-flight protocol ahead of time, including our passenger Code of Conduct.

Support

We’re standing by to help with weather delays, update your flight plans, or just say hi.

Why flight-sharing is A-OK

The FAA prohibits pilots from giving flights for compensation. That’s crystal clear — but sharing travel expenses is allowed when the pilot and passengers have independent reasons for traveling to their destination.
Blackbird has cost sharing down to a science, thanks to our team of aviation and legal experts. You’ll report the cost of your fuel, oil, airport expenditures, and any rental fees, and we’ll safely split the cost between you and your passengers.

The entire Blackbird community follows our Codes of Conduct, passengers and pilots alike. We educate your passengers on proper in-flight protocol, and offer extra coverage through our insurance plan.

See how much you'll save

The fewer empty seats you have, the less you'll pay — and if you rent an aircraft, you can split your rental fee, too.

" I would call my aviation interest an obsession. I'm trying to save up to buy a plane, but I don't want to sacrifice my flying time in order to do so. Hitch let's me save and fly, as well as have a greater sense of mission when passenger's join. It's a total win."

Adam

"On my first tour in Iraq, I flew Black Hawk helicopters. My love for aviation grew, and I eventually bought a Piper Cherokee. When I’m not using Blackbird Hitch on my flights, I use my plane to support Vets With Wings, the charity I started."
